Charles A.L. Lamar, businessman and Confederate officer, was born 11 April 1824, and died 16 April 1865, in Columbus, Georgia. He had interests in real estate, finance, cotton, guano (fertilizer), shipping, and slave trade. Lamar was an organizer and lieutenant colonel of the 7th Battalion which merged with the 61st Georgia Infantry. Hugh Weedon Mercer, Confederate officer, merchant, and banker, was born on November 27, 1808 in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and died in Baden Baden, Germany on June 9, 1877. He graduated from West Point in 1828. He was commissioned a colonel with the Confederate Army when Georgia seceded; was appointed a brigadier general (1861) and commanded the post of Savannah for most of the war.
